What are Travertines?
Anyone who payed attention in geography classes has heard of sandstone and limestone, but we often get asked what travertine is. Travertine is essentially a deposit of limestone formed in caves and around hot springs where cooling, carbonate-saturated groundwater is exposed to the air.
It falls somewhere between marble and limestone for hardness and porosity, and is often distinguished by layered structures of pores and cavities producing an open texture. Its use for construction was first popularised by the Romans, due mainly to the extensive deposits that exist near Rome, Italy.

Indeed the world famous Colosseum in the city is the largest building in the world constructed from the material. Today we stock a wide range of travertine tiles for external use (as you’ll see on this page) as well as a selection of internal.
